The bibliography is divided into four sections and arranged in chronological order within each one. The abbreviated title above each publication is used in the inventory to indicate where, if anywhere, the image in question has been published. To facilitate the identification of periodicals in particular, an effort has been made to show titles complete with all subtitles. Dates or pages identified by context research but not indicated in the publication itself are shown in square brackets. So are any series titles or unchanged re-editions.

The exhibition catalogues listed are a selection of publications relating to exhibitions that featured original prints or a large number of photographs by Karl Blossfeldt. A detailed list of exhibitions in which Blossfeldt's work has been presented is found in the exhibition chronology, where notes are also found on whether an exhibition catalogue was published. The bibliography also includes portfolio editions with new prints or reproductions of Karl Blossfeldt's work. Publications from around 1930 referred to in the secondary literature, containing nude drawings by Karl Blossfeldt, are publications by a namesake living in Leipzig.

With few exceptions, all the publications listed in this bibliography were inspected as originals or copies. A number of articles that could not be found in the secondary literature because of inadequate or incorrect references have not been included. Individual articles available through interlending only as copies were frequently received without page numbers. Where the page number was known or could be ascertained, however, it is indicated. Abbreviations of authors' names could not always be deciphered.

The bibliographic information remains in the original language or in German (Hrsg. = edited, Jg. or Bd. = volume, Nr. = no., H. = issue, Beilage = supplement, Titel = cover, S. = page). Brief comments describe the publications in general terms and indicate the number of Karl Blossfeldt works featured as illustrations.
